The evidence keeps pouring in:
There is no such thing as a safe tan. Although once looked upon as a “healthier” alternative to sun bathing, study after study has proven that tanning beds can be just as dangerous – and possibly even more so – than a tradional sun tan.
The Canadian Medical Associaton (CMA) has recently called for a ban on the use of tanning beds for all Canadians under the age of 18, in addition to calling upon government to enact stricter regulations on the Canadian tanning industry.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, people who begin using tanning beds and other tanning devices before age 30 increases the risk of cancer by 75 per cent.

It was once thought that a high blood level of Vitamin D could reduce cancer risk, but a new study has proven otherwise.
Researchers from the National Cancer Institue have analyzed blood samples from 10 individual studies to determine if people with highr Vitamin D in their blood are less likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma or cancer of the endometrium, esophagus, stomach, kidney, ovary, or pancreas:
“We did not see lower cancer risk in persons with high vitamin D blood concentrations compared to normal concentrations for any of these cancers,” said Demetrius Albanes, M.D., NCI, one of the study investigators. “And, at the other end of the vitamin D spectrum, we did not see higher cancer risk for participants with low levels.”
The study was published in the July issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology. Click here to read more.

A recent article in the Financial Post some interesting information on vitamin supplements and antioxident pills.
According to registered dietician Kristine Liang, it’s easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle. All you need to do is eat lots of fruits and vegetables and remember that supplements don’t take the place of healthy foods:
”Food is the best source of antioxidants hands down. You can’t make up for it with supplements. You have to concentrate on eating healthy,” she says.
If you’re looking to improve your eating habits, the article suggest that you choose brightly-coloured fruits and veggies, which tend to have more antioxidents than pale-coloured foods. And avoid processed foods, which can be full of needless preservatives.

The Canadian Cancer Society is very proud of the work it does. It is the largest national charitable funder of cancer research, after all.
Last year the Canadian Cancer Society invested close to $49 million in cancer research, supporting the best cancer scientists across Canada fighting back against cancer.
To date, the CCS has funded more than $1 billion in cancer research in its 60 year plus history. Its support of cancer research has been possible only through the generosity of our donors and the support of our volunteers. The CCS has a stringent research-review process to ensure that supporters can have the utmost confidence in the excellence of the research being funded. Because of this, the CCS is able to fund approximately 20% of the best research applications because of a lack of funds.
Thanks to research funded by in part by the Canadian Cancer Society, the treatment of cancer and the quality of life during treatment has dramatically improved in the last 20 years. We support research into all types of cancer and all types of research that will lead to better prevention, earlier detection, improved treatments and enhanced quality of life.
Last year through the Society’s support of the Clinical Trials Group, more than 3,500 patients were involved in 74 CTG trials across the county. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers for making this possible!
