Passion grows at Canada Blooms

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

For the second year in a row, Ontario Division participated in Canada Blooms: The Flower & Garden Festival, which took place March 17–21. Keeping with the theme of this year’s show, “Passions,” the exhibit featured a 40-foot long wall of granite with “Join the Fight” carved into it. People were encouraged to write on the wall — messages to cancer, words of encouragement or a tribute to someone — and by the end of the show, the entire wall was filled end-to-end with messages. Ontario Division’s travelling kiosk for collecting video stories added an interactive component to the exhibit.

Canada Blooms served as an excellent launch into Daffodil Days. Toronto staff were on hand to sell daffodils and pins. The Society’s exhibit also took home two awards, including the Best Interpretation of the Show Theme.

British Columbians Step Up the Fight with Badge Of Courage

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The Canadian Cancer Society, British Columbia and Yukon Division, celebrated Daffodil Month by launching an inaugural daffodil pin. British Columbians were asked to join the fight for life by wearing the pin — a badge of courage — on April 9, a.k.a., Daffodil Day.

The program was promoted by the Province of British Columbia and by several cities across B.C. “The City of Vancouver is proud to recognize Daffodil Day on April 9th and to encourage Vancouverites to display their support for the Canadian Cancer Society. Together, by wearing the Daffodil Pin, we will demonstrate our belief that we can fight back against cancer and make a difference,” said Councillor Tim Stevenson, Deputy Mayor, City of Vancouver.

A special public event was held on Daffodil Day at the Vancouver Art Gallery at Fountain Square. Members of the public attended to show their support for cancer survivors and friends and family facing a cancer journey by signing the Field of Hope or adding a pin to the Daffodil Garden. Other events were held in Prince George, Kelowna, Victoria, Surrey and Whitehorse.

Get Screened PEI

Monday, April 19th, 2010

“You can’t find me,” taunts a child’s voice as a small white spot appears and disappears against a cloudy black and blue background.

It sounds like an innocent game of hide-and-seek, but  it’s actually a television ad currently running in PEI as part of its “Get Screened PEI” campaign.

Developed in collaboration with ad agency Partners and Edell, the campaign was launched on January 28 to increase awareness of and participation in cancer screening (breast, cervical, colorectal) for Islanders ages 40–60. Television and radio components of the campaign will run through April/May of this year and a second campaign is under development.

The three key components of the campaign are:

1) Health professional engagement to encourage doctors to talk to their patients about screening, and to prepare them if patients ask about it.

2) Community engagement to increase public awareness about screening and arm the target population with the information they need to make informed choices. Community members have been encouraged to host a “potluck with a purpose” event, sponsored by Paderno Kitchenware, where they can share healthy living tips and cancer screening information with their friends and family.

3) An awareness campaign to create a culture where screening is a routine part of a healthy lifestyle. The campaign is being advertised in the newspaper, on television and radio, and online.

Visitors to the campaign website  are encouraged to fight cancer by signing up to receive screening reminders by e-mail. When a person signs up, a red dot with her or his name is marked by location on a map of PEI.

The site also contains important information about how and where to get screened for colon, breast, cervical and other types of cancers.

The core message of the campaign is clear: You can’t find cancer when it’s itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, but screening can.

More News on the Doogooder Awards

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Earlier this month we noted that our “Fight” video was selected as Best Large Organization Video in the 4th annual DoGooder Nonprofit Video Awards – an annual contest run by See3 Communications in partnership with YouTube.

But what we didn’t mention was that more than 750 videos were submitted to the contest, from which 16 finalists were chosen based on five criteria: message, use of video, quality of video, creativity and emotional appeal. Our winning video was featured on the YouTube homepage for a day and within in 24 hours, “Fight” was viewed more than 70,000 times!

What’s more, the Canadian Cancer Society will receive a $2,500 donation from the Case Foundation. Click here to watch all of the winning videos.

We are very proud of our “Join the Fight” campaign and we are especially thrilled that so many people have watched the video and been inspired to join the fight to eradicate cancer. As Jeff Brooks, blogger and creative director at TrueSense Marketing, so aptly says: “It’s not about how cool the Cancer Society is — it’s about people wanting to stop cancer. That’s what charitable giving is about.”

We won!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Thanks to all of you who voted for the Canadian Cancer Society in the Doogooder nonprofit awards.

Our “Fight” video won first prize in the “large organization” category!!

A Giant Colon Is Taking Over GTA Malls

Monday, March 8th, 2010

If you were at Toronto’s Dufferin Mall last week, you may have noticed a large pink object planted firmly in front of the Walmart.

Your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you: what you were seeing was a 40-foot long, inflatable colon.

In order to draw awareness to colorectal cancer awareness month, the good folks at ColonCancerCheck,a government initiative, have set up a walk-through colon, complete with polyps and video screens that discuss cancer prevention.

The colon has since departed Dufferin Mall. It will make its next appearance at St. Lawrence Lounge (Queen’s Park) March 17-18. Then it’s off to Lansdowne Mall in Peterborough (March 23-24) before finishing its tour in Pembroke’s Pemboke Mall March 26-27.
